Mercurio: File a Residence Renewal Online in Spain

Mercurio is where you sign and submit an extranjería renewal — not ICP. Certificate + AutoFirma, 60/90-day window, then fingerprints and lote. For NIE and TIE holders. #NIE #TIE #lote

Last updated: 2026-08-17

Mercurio only accepts the authorization types it lists. The list changes. Check the official page before you file. · A granted renewal of the authorization is not the plastic TIE. Fingerprints stay in person. Then check lote.

Spain. Nationwide extranjería e-filing (Delegaciones / Subdelegaciones del Gobierno). For people with a NIE and usually a TIE.

Last checked: 17 August 2026. Types, window, and signature rules follow official Mercurio and Migraciones pages on that date. Screen labels can change; the legal requirements do not.

Mercurio is the government desk where you file a new extranjería authorization, a renewal, or extra documents on an open file — on a computer, with an electronic signature.

It is not the appointment site. It is not the lote page.

Three sites, three jobs

SiteWhat it doesSignature?
MercurioFile the authorization (new, renewal, or extra papers)Yes — digital certificate or DNIe + AutoFirma
ICPBook cita previa (fingerprints, pickup) and read the office lote lineUsually no. Many bookings work without login
SCLT consultarCheck whether the card has arrivedNo. Login buttons do not answer lote

Login comparison: eIdentifier vs Cl@ve.

Authorization vs the plastic card

People say “renew the TIE” for two different acts:

  1. Renew the authorization (residence or stay) — this is the legal permit. On Mercurio, for the types it lists, you fill the form, sign, then submit.
  2. Get the new plastic TIE — after approval, fingerprints are in person. Then lote tells you when the card is at the station.

Mercurio finishes step 1. It does not print the card.

When you may file (official window)

Migraciones: electronic renewals and long-term residence applications must be filed 60 days before the authorization ends, or 90 days after.

If the site says you are out of time, you are out of time on this channel. Do not invent a workaround on ICP.

What you need before you open Mercurio

Official Mercurio:

  • A computer with internet. A printer if you want a paper copy of the receipt.
  • A recognised digital certificate or DNIe. For most people with a NIE that is the FNMT software certificate on that same PC. No card reader for that file.
  • AutoFirma installed. Mercurio uses it to sign the form and the PDFs you attach.

Cl@ve Móvil / Permanente can identify you on many sites. They cannot electronically sign this packet (administración.gob.es). If you only have Cl@ve, you can look things up — you cannot complete Mercurio.

On the login page, click eIdentifier (English) or DNI-e / certificado electrónico (Spanish). That button calls the certificate already on the PC.

Lawyers, gestores administrativos, and graduados sociales have a separate Mercurio door. They must be registered with their professional council. This guide is for you filing your own file.

Practical: do this on a quiet Windows PC where the certificate and AutoFirma already work. Mercurio’s own “technical requirements” block is years out of date (old Internet Explorer / Java). Do not copy that list. If AutoFirma never starts, stop and fix the certificate setup before you upload documents.

Which filings Mercurio accepts (list as of 17 August 2026)

Not every TIE situation is on this list. Open the official Mercurio page the day you file.

Renewals and changes Mercurio lists

  • Long-term residence after 5 years of continuous residence (RD 557/2011 art. 148.1)
  • Renewal of employee / self-employed / non-lucrative / family-reunification temporary residence
  • Blue Card, researchers, and “exemption from work authorization” renewals
  • Change from certain arraigo / exceptional-circumstance permits into employee or self-employed residence
  • Extension of student stay (and family of the student; or change into family reunification)
  • Permanent EU-family residence card

If your case is not there, Mercurio will not invent a box for it. File at the extranjería office, or use a registered representative.

You can also attach documents to a file that is already in process. Official Migraciones: that attachment is digitally signed with your certificate and has the same effect as filing at a public registry. Keep the receipt.

Official filing steps (what Mercurio itself says)

  1. Open Mercurio from the PC that holds the certificate.
  2. Identify with the certificate (eIdentifier / DNI-e / certificado electrónico).
  3. Choose new authorization or renewal.
  4. Fill the form. Attach the PDFs the procedure asks for.
  5. Before the file is registered, sign the form and the attachments with the certificate. AutoFirma must be installed. After registration you get an electronic resguardo (PDF). Save it. Print it if you want paper.
  6. Pay the tasa and, if you can, attach the proof in the same filing. Mercurio: pay through the administration payment gateway, or download the form and pay at a bank. If you skip the proof, they tell you to take it to the extranjería office later — that can delay the file.

Tasa for the authorization is usually 790-052 (extranjería). Tasa for the plastic card after approval is 790-012 (police). Do not mix them. 790-052 online payment is a separate screen on the administration site; 790-012 is generated at sede.policia.gob.es.

What “sign, then submit” feels like

You are not typing a password into Cl@ve and hoping the file goes through.

  1. Documents are PDFs on the PC.
  2. You click sign / submit.
  3. The browser asks which certificate to use (the FNMT file you installed).
  4. AutoFirma signs the form and each attachment.
  5. The site gives you a PDF receipt with your NIE and a filing number. That PDF is the proof. If the tab dies before you save it, you have a problem.

Cl@ve is not a substitute for that signature.

After you file

The application follows the normal extranjería path. You are notified of the result.

If you ticked electronic notification, or you belong to a group that must use it, notices sit on the sede: mis expedientes / sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. You open them with the same certificate. Migraciones: if you do not open a notice within 10 calendar days, it can be treated as rejected and deadlines keep running. Put a mobile number and email on the form so you get an alert.

When the authorization is granted, you still need:

  1. Cita on ICP for fingerprints (toma de huellas) if a new card is required — how to apply / first card is the physical-card track.
  2. The receipt (resguardo) from that appointment, with the lote.
  3. https://sclt.es/tie/consultar/ to see when the office has the card. What lote means. ICP itself is often down; SCLT is the check page; numbers still follow official data.

How to choose, in one line

You need to…Use
Sign and submit a listed renewal / new authorizationMercurio + digital certificate + AutoFirma + eIdentifier

Book fingerprints / pickupICP
See if the card is therehttps://sclt.es/tie/consultar/

Do not buy a card reader to “turn on eIdentifier” for the usual FNMT software certificate.
