eIdentifier: The Button That Uses Your Digital Certificate

On immigration, tax, town hall and traffic websites you will see eIdentifier (English) or DNI-e / certificado electrónico (Spanish). It is the login on the Cl@ve page that uses a digital certificate already on your computer — not a second identity you activate from the TIE chip.

What you click, what actually logs in

Official Cl@ve calls this door DNI-e or electronic certificate. If a certificate is installed, the browser offers it. For most people with a NIE, that file is the FNMT digital certificate.

You do not apply for eIdentifier. You apply for the certificate, install it once, then click eIdentifier whenever you need it.

A card reader is not required for that FNMT file. Readers are for a Spanish DNI chip.

The job that needs this button

On Mercurio, for the types it lists, renewing the authorization often means sign, then submit. That signature is eIdentifier calling the FNMT certificate, with AutoFirma. Full walk-through: Mercurio online renewal. Cl@ve cannot sign this packet. ICP is appointments and lote — not that filing.

Setup: Digital certificate, 4 steps.

How to use it

1. Install the digital certificate on the PC you will use.
2. Open the government site (Mercurio for a signed filing; or ICP, AEAT, Social Security, town hall, DGT).
3. Choose eIdentifier (or DNI-e / certificado electrónico).
4. Pick your certificate, enter its password if asked.

Same PC, every time. Export a backup if you change computers (see the certificate guide).
